Arrested former IGP Benazir held passports of several countries

Benazir Ahmed, the former Inspector General of Police arrested in Dubai, was found to hold passports of several countries, according to police.

A source in Dubai said on Sunday (June 14) that, besides Bangladesh, he holds a Portuguese passport. He also has a residence permit for the United Arab Emirates, the source said.

Earlier, several responsible officials of Bangladesh Police said Benazir Ahmed had been arrested in Dubai in an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case.

In the ACC case, the government issued a Red Notice against Benazir Ahmed through Interpol in February 2025. A source in Dubai said Benazir Ahmed was arrested when he arrived in Dubai on June 12. He is being interrogated, the source said.

Earlier, on Sunday morning, various media outlets learned from reliable sources that the former IGP, Benazir, had been arrested in Dubai. After learning of the news, calls were made to two additional IGPs, a DIG and an AIG at police headquarters to ask about the matter. Each of them confirmed that Benazir Ahmed had been arrested in Dubai. None, however, agreed to make an official statement or be named.

On condition of anonymity, a police official said a letter had reached Bangladesh Police from Dubai Interpol on June 12. The letter stated that Benazir Ahmed had been arrested by Dubai police, the official said.

Another police official said that, in the ACC case, an arrest warrant was issued against Benazir Ahmed through Interpol in February 2025. On that basis, Dubai police arrested him, the official said.

That police official also said the home ministry had been informed of Benazir Ahmed’s arrest. The home and foreign ministries will take the necessary steps to bring him back to the country, the official said.
