Soaring prices force consumers to cut back on sacrifice animals

The government has set new prices for the slaughter of sacrificial animals in anticipation of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. In the latest decision, salt beef skin is priced at 2 taka per square foot and goat skin at 3 taka. Commerce Minister Khandker Abdul Muktadir announced this new price list at a press briefing after a meeting on the proper arrangements for sacrifices on Wednesday (May 13) evening at the Secretariat.

According to the announcement by the Ministry of Commerce, this year, the price of salt beef skin inside Dhaka city has been set at 62 to 67 taka per square foot. Outside Dhaka, this price has been set between 57 and 62 taka. Last year, the price of beef skin in Dhaka was 60 to 65 taka, and outside Dhaka, it was 55 to 60 taka. Thus, the price has increased by 2 taka per square foot this year. Similarly, the price of goat skin across the country has been set at 25 to 30 taka per square foot, and sheep skin at 22 to 25 taka.

Commerce Minister Khandker Abdul Muktadir said in a briefing that to ensure the hides of sacrificial animals are not wasted, the government has decided to make arrangements through district and upazila administrations to collect them from fields. To ensure proper preservation, necessary training has already been provided to meat businessmen and personnel from various madrasas. The minister mentioned that this training program and ensuring the supply of salt across the country will incur a government expenditure of nearly Tk 20 crore.

In a bid to protect the country’s leather industry and prevent illegal tanning, Commerce Minister [Name] has announced stringent measures. He stated that law enforcement agencies have been directed to remain highly vigilant in curbing illegal tanning activities. The government aims to promote the domestic leather industry through a unified initiative. During this time, he instructed field officials to ensure no arrangements are made for the collection and preservation of Korban leather.
