The South African group March and March has called nationwide mass protests. Alongside the issue of undocumented foreign nationals, it has announced a “Men’s March” on Wednesday against recent killings of women, gender-based violence and crime.
March and March had earlier declared September 30 a “deadline” for undocumented foreigners to leave South Africa. The deadline has no legal force; deporting foreign nationals and enforcing immigration law is the job of the relevant government authorities.
March and March said men have been specially called on to join the September 30 programme, saying men must not stay silent but speak out against the killing of women and gender-based violence. It said marches are planned in several areas, including Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
