Bad loans rise by Tk 31,488 crore in three months

Dhaka: Defaulted loans in Bangladesh have risen again. Bad loans in the banking sector increased by Tk 31,488 crore (about $2.6 billion) over the past three months, according to the latest report from Bangladesh Bank. One crore equals 10 million; one lakh equals 100,000.

According to the report, defaulted loans in the banking sector stood at Tk 557,216 crore (about $46 billion) at the end of December, or 30.60 percent of the loans disbursed at the time.

By the end of March this year, bad loans had risen to Tk 588,704 crore (about $49 billion), or 32.26 percent of total loans. The banking sector’s total outstanding loans currently stand at Tk 1,824,668 crore.
