Average daily turnover of shares and units on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) was 998 crore taka last week, down from 1,182 crore taka the previous week. Despite the decline in turnover, the index trended upward during the period. The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the country’s other bourse, also saw its index rise last week.
Market analysis shows the DSE’s broad index, DSEX, rose 23 points from the previous week to close at 5,884 points, up from 5,861 points. The DS-30 index of selected companies rose 0.88 points over the week to 2,193 points, up from 2,192 points. The Shariah index, DSES, fell 4 points to 1,177 points, down from 1,181 points.
A total of 387 companies, mutual funds, and corporate bonds were traded on the DSE last week. Of these, 162 saw price gains, 208 saw declines, and 17 remained unchanged, while 24 saw no trading. Shares of Brac Bank, Pubali Bank, Sharp Industries, British American Tobacco, and NRBC Bank contributed most to the index’s rise last week.
By sector, textile shares dominated trading last week. Analysis shows the textile sector accounted for 22.1 percent of total DSE turnover, the highest share. The general insurance sector ranked second with 18.3 percent, followed by the pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector in third with 8.5 percent. The engineering and banking sectors tied for fourth with 7.5 percent each, while the miscellaneous sector ranked fifth with 7 percent of total turnover.
The jute sector posted the highest positive return on the DSE last week at 4.3 percent, followed by services at 4 percent, textiles at 3.2 percent, miscellaneous at 2.9 percent, and general insurance at 2.7 percent. The mutual fund sector posted the largest negative return at 3.7 percent, followed by life insurance at 3.6 percent and travel at 1.3 percent.
On the CSE, the broad index CASPI rose 0.50 percent to 15,803 points last week, up from 15,725 points. The CSCX index rose 0.49 percent over the week to 9,628 points, up from 9,581 points.
The CSE recorded 202 crore taka in share and unit turnover last week. Of the 329 companies and mutual funds traded, 145 saw price gains, 162 saw declines, and 22 remained unchanged.
