Trump’s approval rating hits new low

US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has suffered a sharp decline. A Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll found support for him as president has fallen to 33 percent, the lowest level of his current term. The same poll found 64 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s conduct in office.

Public support for Trump is falling as the United States remains embroiled in the ongoing war with Iran, which has driven up energy prices. Roughly 80 percent of poll respondents believe the war with Iran could drag on for a long time, while only about 20 percent believe US involvement in the war was the right decision. Even among Republican voters, support on this question is far from unanimous.

The four-day online poll surveyed 1,166 American adults. The margin of error is 3 percentage points, meaning the results could be off by up to 3 points in either direction. Trump’s approval stood at 35 percent in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in early August, meaning it has fallen a further 2 percentage points in a short span.

The cost of living has emerged as another major factor behind Trump’s declining popularity. The war has strained international energy trade and driven up gasoline prices in the United States, deepening economic anxiety among ordinary Americans.

Meanwhile, with November’s midterm elections approaching, the drop in public support has become a source of concern for Republicans. Democrats are now drawing somewhat more public support on key issues such as the economy and cost of living. Republicans’ once-substantial advantage on immigration policy has also narrowed considerably.

The poll results suggest Trump’s biggest challenge now is not just the opposition party, but public discontent generated by his own policies. In particular, the war, energy prices, and cost of living could become major issues for his party in the upcoming election.
