WASHINGTON — The U.S. Justice Department on Monday announced a $1.78 billion fund to compensate individuals it said were targeted during former President Joe Biden’s administration, drawing sharp criticism from Democrats who called it a political slush fund for President Donald Trump’s allies.

Critics described the fund as part of a long-running political strategy by Trump. Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden called it “a massive secret fund engineered for right-wing political violence.”

Political analysts said the fund could become one of the most contentious moves of Trump’s second term and has placed fresh political pressure on the Republican Party.
