Former US ambassador and White House adviser Mark Ginsberg has said Iran is “playing” President Donald Trump as domestic political pressure mounts, telling Al Jazeera that the upcoming midterm elections and declining approval ratings are shaping Trump’s decisions more than any long-term strategy.
“At the end of the day, Donald Trump will do whatever is necessary to manage the upcoming midterms and his declining popularity at home,” Ginsberg said.
He said Tehran is well aware of Washington’s domestic political dynamics and is prepared to pursue a long-term strategy.
“The Iranians are closely watching the opinion polls here. This regime wants to survive to the last Iranian. No matter how much punishment or pressure is imposed on the people, they are determined to hold on to power,” Ginsberg said.
He added that the American public is growing increasingly frustrated with the current situation, but Trump is in no position to accept defeat.
Ginsberg said Tehran is betting on a familiar outcome: that Washington will eventually back down from its demands and Iran will secure relief from sanctions. “The Iranians are essentially playing both Trump and the United States,” he said.
