Police in Jhenaidah have arrested 10 members of an inter-district robbery ring over the hijacking of an easy-bike. A hijacked easy-bike, eight mobile phones and 3,400 taka from the sale of the easy-bike were recovered.
The cyber security cell of Jhenaidah district police gave the information at noon on Saturday, July 25.
According to police, on the afternoon of 19 July four people boarded the vehicle of a 14-year-old easy-bike driver from Talsar village in Kotchandpur upazila, posing as passengers. They then took him to the Bankira field area of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, tied his mouth, hands and feet, and fled with the easy-bike and his mobile phone.
A case was filed over the incident at Jhenaidah Sadar police station on 21 July. In the investigation, with the help of information technology, the Jhenaidah cyber crime investigation cell and Sadar police conducted drives in various areas of Chuadanga and Kushtia and arrested the members of the ring.
Those arrested are Akash Sardar, alias Dakat Akash, of Chuadanga Sadar upazila, and Ziarul, alias Zia, 44; Sirajul Islam, 40; Akhtar Molla, 40; Rashidul Islam, alias Boltu, 50; Liton Ali, 50; Sajib Sheikh, 24; Masud Rana, 32; Islam Khan, alias Taher, 65; and Ashraful Islam, 42, of Kushtia.
Police said four people directly involved in the hijacking were detained first. On the basis of information they gave, six more people connected with the buying and selling of the stolen easy-bike and goods were arrested in drives in Kushtia Sadar, Kumarkhali and Mirpur areas.
In initial questioning, police said, those arrested admitted to being involved in organised robbery and hijacking over a long period in various districts including Jhenaidah, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Magura and Pabna.
The additional superintendent of police of Jhenaidah, Sheikh Billal Hossain, said those arrested face several cases of theft, robbery and hijacking at various police stations. The process of taking legal action against them is under way.
