National Citizen Party leaders boycotted a reception and discussion for bereaved July uprising families and participants in Dhaka on Wednesday after a dispute over a video documentary shown at the start of the program.

The event began with a recitation from the Quran at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, attended as chief guest.

NCP member secretary Akhtar Hossain spoke before party leaders left the venue. Senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adib, Munira Sharmin and other party leaders were with him.

Adib said the documentary distorted history by omitting the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the movement’s nine-point and one-point declarations. That was the party’s assessment of the documentary.

He also alleged that NCP activists had been attacked during state programs held across the country to mark July Uprising Day, and said the party decided to boycott the event in protest. The allegation was not independently verified in the report.

After the documentary was shown, some injured uprising participants and bereaved family members chanted that it was false, creating tension at the event. Organizers repeatedly appealed from the stage for calm.
