The Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) has temporarily suspended its public relations officer Jinat Joardar Ripa on charges of belittling and mocking martyrs of the July 2024 mass uprising.
The suspension order was signed Sunday by BUBT Registrar Dr. Md. Harun-or-Rashid.
The letter cited violation of the university’s employee code of conduct, specifically its zero-tolerance policy on political involvement in any form, and insulting the spirit of the July revolution. She was suspended effective 10:30am on July 5, 2026, pending completion of an investigation, the disciplinary committee’s recommendation, and the Syndicate’s final decision.
She was advised to remain off the BUBT campus and ordered to immediately surrender all official documents, keys, and other university property to the registrar’s office.
Students had earlier held a protest rally demanding her removal and exemplary punishment. The demonstration took place around 11:30am Sunday at BUBT’s main gate in Rupnagar, Mirpur.
Students from various departments participated. They said the officer had posted on Facebook mocking the helicopter shootings of civilians, including children, during the July-August 2024 uprising, and that she holds Awami League sympathies.
“Our brothers who took bullets in their chests during the July revolution gave us a new Bangladesh. No form of disrespect toward those brave martyrs can be tolerated,” the students said.
They noted that martyrs Sujon Mahmud and Tahmid Abdullah were BUBT students who gave their lives during the uprising. “They honored our campus and Mirpur with their sacrifice. Yet a senior officer of this very campus dared to mock the blood of martyrs. Those who have no respect for the martyrs have no right to be in any educational institution,” the students said.
When contacted, Jinat Joardar said she was on leave and was not aware of the developments.
