Expatriates sent about $1.8 billion in remittances to the country in the first 18 days of the current (2026-27) financial year. Remittances through legal channels rose 20.2 percent in this period, $302 million more than the same period of the previous financial year. According to Bangladesh Bank’s updated report on Sunday, a total of $1.798 billion in remittances came in from 1 to 18 July, against $1.496 billion in the same period of the just-ended 2025-26 financial year.

Central bank data show that in the three days from 16 to 18 July alone, $161 million in expatriate income came in, after $567 million in the first five days of the month. With remittance flows continuing steadily through the month, total expatriate income reached $1.798 billion by the 18th day. Compared with the same period last financial year, remittances rose $302 million in the first 18 days of the current financial year, equal to 20.2 percent growth.

Economists believe the positive trend in expatriate income is being maintained by a rising tendency to send money through banking channels and by various government initiatives and incentives to send remittances through legal routes. This flow will play an important role in strengthening the country’s foreign-exchange reserves, meeting import costs and maintaining the balance of foreign transactions.
