Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said saving lives was the government’s paramount concern as the country grappled with the aftermath of Wednesday’s powerful twin earthquakes.
Rodríguez said rescue workers from the United States, Dominican Republic, Mexico and El Salvador were expected to begin arriving within hours. Hotels and shelters had been prepared for people who had lost their homes. All non-essential classroom activities and other public functions had been suspended.
La Guaira state, north of the capital Caracas, has sustained the worst damage. Rodríguez declared it a disaster zone and described it as “a genuine tragedy,” saying dozens of buildings had collapsed across the state. She confirmed that at least 32 people had been killed and more than 700 injured — though the La Guaira toll was not yet included in those figures at the time of her statement. The Simón Bolívar international airport also sustained damage.
