The report said the incident occurred in the northeastern Aomori Prefecture area. The bear attacked the tourist near an observation deck on the shore of Lake Towada. The attack left a bite wound on the tourist’s right hand.
The injured tourist was quickly taken to hospital by helicopter. According to Towada city government and local fire department officials, the person remained conscious and able to speak after the attack.
Human encounters with bears have risen significantly in Japan recently, particularly in the country’s north and northeast. According to Japanese government figures, bear attacks have killed six people and injured at least 55 across 17 prefectures since April 1 this year. That is the highest death toll for the same period since comparable records began in 2008.
According to the report, about 60 percent of the attacks occurred in mountainous forest areas. Most of those attacked were alone. Of the six people killed, five are believed to have been attacked by bears while foraging for wild plants in forests.
According to Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, bear attacks injured 238 people and killed 13 in the country in fiscal year 2025.
