Junior Foreign Minister Humayun Kabir has said there is no rush over the prime minister’s visit to India. “He will make this visit at an appropriate time, once national interest has been secured through discussions,” he said.

He made the remarks Saturday while responding to reporters’ questions after paying tribute to the martyrs of the great Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar.

Asked about Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, the junior foreign minister said: “Sheikh Hasina is a terrorist who fled to India. Judicial proceedings are under way against her, and verdicts have already been delivered in several cases. A few more cases remain pending. Bangladesh and India have an extradition treaty. So the matter of Sheikh Hasina isn’t a new decision to be made; it’s an ongoing matter between the two countries.”

Humayun Kabir said: “Bangladesh wants to maintain a positive and effective relationship with India. India is Bangladesh’s neighbor. But Bangladesh will not compromise its national interest in its relationship with any country, including India.”

On the possible timing of the India visit, Humayun Kabir said: “If a consensus can be reached based on national interest even by tomorrow, the visit could happen next week. Or it could happen the week after. But there’s no rush about this.”
