US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has voiced strong support for India’s position on Jammu and Kashmir. He said Kashmir is an important part of India. He made the comment during a visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, August 19.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Gor said: “Kashmir is an important part of India. This is my first time visiting this place. It is an incredibly beautiful place.” Standing beside Omar Abdullah, he added: “We had a very warm and cordial meeting. We look forward to advancing our relationship further.”
Sergio Gor is also serving as US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. This is the first visit by any senior American diplomat to Kashmir since the clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh in May 2020 and last year’s “Operation Sindoor.”
His visit is being seen as a significant US diplomatic move in the region in recent years. Gor’s trip to Kashmir carries particular significance, especially amid various strategic shifts and tensions in South Asia.
Discussing his meeting with Sergio Gor, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the talks covered bilateral relations between the United States and India in detail, alongside Jammu and Kashmir. “We had a very good meeting,” he said. “We got the opportunity to discuss the relationship between the two countries. But the discussion focused especially on Jammu and Kashmir, and on what the United States can do for this region.”
