DHAKA — A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted three days of remand for dismissed Lieutenant Colonel Md. Afzal Naser in a case accusing him of attempting to kill Jagannath University (JnU) student Anik Kumar Das during last year’s July uprising in the capital’s Kotwali police station area.
Police produced Naser before Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Tuesday, May 5. The investigating officer sought a seven-day remand to allow a thorough probe. After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junayed granted three days of remand.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) arrested Naser on March 30 from a house in the capital’s Mirpur DOHS area.
According to the case file, Anik was wounded on July 16, 2024 when a procession of the anti-discrimination student movement passed Jagannath University’s main gate and reached the area near the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s court, where activists of the Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League allegedly opened fire. Anik was first given primary treatment at National Medical College Hospital and was later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. On November 21, 2024, Anik himself filed an attempted-murder case against 253 people.
