The Minister for Commerce, Industries and Textiles and Jute, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir MP, has said the government is working tirelessly to reduce the public’s suffering. In that continuity, he said, a new project has been taken up to build a road from Ambarkhana to Lakkatura to ease traffic congestion in Sylhet city, which will be a blessing for the people of Sylhet.

He made the remarks as chief guest at a joint meeting with officials of the Roads and Highways Department and Sylhet City Corporation at the Sylhet Circuit House on Saturday.

Briefed on the progress of road construction work, the minister said the construction of the main roads and the ongoing projects must be completed quickly and according to plan in order to reduce the suffering of ordinary people. He gave the officials concerned the necessary instructions on the matter.

The minister said there are 42 wards under Sylhet City Corporation. Several mega-projects are being implemented to ensure the overall development of these wards. Through the implementation of these projects, he said, Sylhet city will become a more modern, cleaner and better-ordered city. At the same time the main problems relating to waterlogging and road infrastructure will also be solved.

He further said the city’s canals must be preserved to relieve waterlogging. Regular excavation and maintenance of canals is essential to ensure the normal flow of water and to control flooding and waterlogging in the monsoon. A permanent solution to waterlogging is possible only through implementing a sound plan for the natural flow from water sources to the river.

Among those present at the meeting were the administrator of Sylhet City Corporation, Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury; the administrator of the Zila Parishad, Abul Kaher Chowdhury Shamim; the chairman of the Sylhet Development Authority, Rezaul Hasan Koyes Lodi; and the deputy commissioner, Abdullah Al Mamun.

After the meeting the commerce minister told journalists that several projects have been taken up to improve Sylhet’s road communications. Among them, the road from Sylhet to Moulvibazar via Fenchuganj will be widened further. A plan has likewise been taken up to build an alternative road from Sylhet Osmani International Airport to Lakkatura and from Lakkatura to TB Gate.
