The forest department has filed a case against a father and son in Damurhuda, Chuadanga, over allegations of killing 29 birds with poisoned bait.

The case was filed at Chuadanga court Wednesday afternoon, August 19, under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act.

While the birds’ market value was roughly 5,500 taka, the biodiversity and environmental damage has been assessed at more than 205,000 taka.

According to forest department sources, poison was mixed with seeds and scattered across a farm plot in the Uttarpara area of the upazila’s Parkrishnapur-Madna union on the night of August 15. The next morning, 24 spotted doves, three sparrows and two pigeons died after eating the poisoned seeds. After being alerted, a mobile court led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md Shahin Alam conducted an operation on the evening of August 16.

During the operation, the main accused, Atiyar Rahman, fled, but his son, Md Rajan, admitted to the magistrate present that he had assisted in the bird hunting. The mobile court then fined Rajan 500 taka, and poisoned seeds and dead birds were recovered from the scene and included in a seizure list of evidence.

Damurhuda upazila forest officer Suresh Chandra Mistri subsequently filed a case against them at Chuadanga court under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act.

He said the estimated monetary value of the dead birds was 5,210 taka, but the damage to the environment and ecosystem was assessed at 205,500 taka. He said the forest department would continue this kind of operation to protect wildlife and curb illegal hunting.
