The 50th death anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was observed with a day-long program in Karpasdanga, Damurhuda upazila, Chuadanga. Wreaths were laid at the poet’s memorial plaque, followed by prayers held to mark the occasion.

The program began at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, August 27, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the poet’s memorial near the thatched-roof house in Karpasdanga’s Mission Para. Local administration officials, leaders and activists from various political parties, representatives of social and cultural organizations, poets, writers and members of the public took part.

Damurhuda upazila administration, led by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), laid wreaths at the poet’s memorial plaque. Leaders of the upazila BNP and its affiliated organizations also laid flowers to pay tribute to the national poet.

Afterward, a special prayer was held at the Karpasdanga Nazrul Memorial Library premises seeking forgiveness for the poet’s departed soul.

Speakers at the discussion session said Kazi Nazrul Islam, a poet of humanity, equality and secular consciousness, made an extraordinary contribution to Bengali literature and culture.

Speakers also noted that Nazrul’s creative life spanned just 23 years. In that short span, he made a singular contribution across various branches of Bengali literature, including poetry, songs, short stories, novels, essays and plays. Alongside his literary work, he was also known as a journalist, singer and actor.

Karpasdanga holds a deep connection to the memory of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The poet traveled there by river with his family twice, in 1926 and 1927. He stayed with his wife Pramila, his two sons Sabyasachi and Bulbul, and his mother-in-law Giribala, in a thatched-roof house on the garden estate of Harshapriya Biswas in Karpasdanga’s Mission Para. That historic house still carries the poet’s memory today.

According to locals, Nazrul composed various rhymes, poems and songs during his stay in Karpasdanga. As a result, the site holds special significance for admirers of Nazrul and literature enthusiasts. To preserve his memory and introduce it to new generations, his birth and death anniversaries are observed each year with various programs.

Local dignitaries and leaders of political, social and cultural organizations attended the day-long program.
