The powerful Typhoon Noul has struck southern China. Strong winds and heavy rain have begun in the Guangdong region, including Hong Kong, as a result. Fearing disaster, more than 715,000 people have been moved to safety from Guangdong province.

China’s National Meteorological Centre said the typhoon made landfall on the coast of Huidong county in Guangdong province early on Sunday. The state news agency Xinhua said it is the most powerful typhoon to strike China this year.

The Hong Kong Observatory said winds near the centre of the typhoon were blowing at up to 110 kilometres an hour. It later moved inland in Guangdong and began weakening gradually, but strong winds and heavy rain are continuing.

About 350 flights have been cancelled in Hong Kong because of the typhoon and at least nine people have been injured. Many trees have been uprooted in the coastal areas of Guangdong. The weather authorities said further heavy rain and squally winds could sweep some areas of southern Guangdong and Fujian province.
