Gas and electricity supply in the country currently falls short of demand, State Minister for Planning Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki has said. He said the government has adopted a long-term plan to raise the country’s oil reserves, currently sufficient for about one month, to six months, to ensure energy security. The current reserve of roughly one and a half months will quickly be raised to three months, and later, in phases, to six months.
He shared the information with reporters Wednesday, August 19, after a meeting of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) held at the Planning Ministry in the capital’s Agargaon.
The state minister said a technical fault at the floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Moheshkhali had recently caused some disruption to gas supply nationwide, which has since been resolved. Gas and electricity supply currently does not meet demand in the country, he said. To overcome the crisis, however, the government is placing special emphasis on increasing local gas production and renewable electricity generation. He said the government is taking coordinated steps to further improve the power system.
Describing the power and energy crisis as temporary, Zonayed Saki said the government is working continuously to resolve the existing problems. Gas is being imported regularly from abroad to meet urgent needs. However, he said, importing gas alone will not fully resolve the crisis; the necessary LNG stations must also be established. Noting that setting up new LNG stations will take some time, he assured that the power and energy situation would return to normal soon.
