In Chandpur’s Haimchar upazila, a housewife named Nur Nahar (18) was allegedly killed after torture over unmet dowry demands, with the accusation falling on her husband and his family. Police detained her husband, Nirab Hossain Rony Bhuiyan, and her mother-in-law after the incident came to light on Wednesday (10 June) morning. Nur Nahar was a resident of Noakhali’s Senbagh upazila and the mother of a seven-month-old daughter.
According to police and local sources, Nur Nahar married auto-rickshaw driver Nirab Hossain Rony Bhuiyan of Uttar Algi union in Haimchar about a year ago after a relationship. Her family alleges she was tortured at various times over dowry demands ever since. Her mother said the family learned of her daughter’s death late on Tuesday night; arriving in Haimchar in the morning, they found the husband’s family claiming it was suicide. The family alleges Nur Nahar was killed in a planned manner. The mother further alleged that Rony Bhuiyan was a drug addict who regularly pressed for drug money, gold ornaments and furniture, and that her daughter was physically and mentally tortured when the demands were not met; last month, she said, the family secretly gave 37,000 taka to keep the marriage together. Relatives claim Rony Bhuiyan had demanded about 400,000 taka to go abroad, that the dispute had run for a long time, and that there had been repeated beatings.
The husband’s family, by contrast, claims Nur Nahar hanged herself in her room on Tuesday night; she was taken to the Haimchar upazila health complex around midnight, where a doctor declared her dead. Police visited the hospital and the scene, and the body was sent to the Chandpur Sadar Hospital morgue to determine the cause of death. Haimchar police officer-in-charge (OC) Md Nazmul Hasan said a murder case had been filed on the family’s complaint, and the husband and his mother detained. “Preliminarily, the complaint is that this was a killing. The actual cause of death will be confirmed once the autopsy report is received,” he said, adding that anyone else found involved would face legal action after investigation.
