The government is working towards completing all five tiers of local government elections within the current fiscal year, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shah Alam has said.
He said this in response to journalists’ questions while inspecting the Sylhet City Corporation’s (SCC) secondary waste-management transfer station at Parairchak in Sylhet on Thursday afternoon.
The state minister said there was a plan to complete elections at all tiers within the current fiscal year. After this August, the Local Government Division, the Finance Division and the Election Commission would jointly meet to decide which tier of local government election would be held first.
On the former prime minister, the state minister said clearly that a court verdict had already been delivered against Sheikh Hasina, so there was no scope for her to return directly to the country. If she returned, she would have to go to jail, and the verdict would be carried out through the legal process.
Praising Sylhet city’s amenities and cleanliness, Mir Shah Alam said Sylhet was much cleaner than other cities in the country, and that the city corporation was doing quite well in canal excavation and implementing a dengue-prevention project.
On the SCC’s waste-management project, he said a joint project with Lafarge Surma Holcim (cement) had begun with the city corporation in 2024 but had not taken full shape, and would now be made fully operational. Under the project, the city’s waste would be processed, with Lafarge Surma taking the plastic portion to use as its own fuel, and the SCC planning to convert the remaining waste into organic fertiliser.
Present during the inspection were Sylhet City Corporation administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, Sylhet-3 MP MA Malek, SCC chief executive officer Rezai Rafin Sarkar and senior officials of the relevant offices.
