The driver and a passenger of a battery-run auto-rickshaw have been killed after being struck by the Cox’s Bazar-bound Parjatak Express train in the Kaliais area of Satkania, Chattogram.
The accident took place at about 2pm on Sunday (September 20) at the Kaliais Purba Kathgar level crossing.
Those killed were the auto-rickshaw driver Abdul Sakkur, 35, son of the late Saheb Mia Sawdagar of Uttar Dharmapur Muhuripara in Dharmapur union, and the passenger Abu Taher, 55, son of the late Haji Ahmad Hossain of Maingapara village in Kaliais union.
Local sources said Abu Taher had gone shopping in Chandanaish-Dohazari with his younger son. He dropped his son at the BOC intersection for a haircut and was on his way home by auto-rickshaw when the vehicle was struck by the train as it crossed the level crossing. Abu Taher died at the scene and Sakkur died on the way to Dohazari hospital.
Abul Bashar, a neighbour of Abu Taher, said scrub beside the level crossing makes it hard to see clearly when trains are running.
Contacted about it, the GRP police inspector Sujan Kanti Dey confirmed the incident and said the necessary legal steps were being taken.
