The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has continued its humanitarian relief for people affected by floods caused by continuous rain and hill run-off in Chattogram, as part of its social responsibility. The relief is being run on the initiative of acting president Selim Rahman and under the supervision of acting vice-president Enamul Aziz Chowdhury.

As part of the effort, on 14 and 16 July, 200 sacks of relief each were formally handed over from BGMEA to Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) commissioner Hasan Md Shawkat Ali and Chattogram district Superintendent of Police Masud Alam, BPM, so they could be delivered quickly to flood-hit people. The relief was handed over by acting vice-president Enamul Aziz Chowdhury, director and former first vice-president SM Abu Toyob, director MD M Mohiuddin Chowdhury, former director Khondaker Belayet Hossain, and BGMEA standing-committee chairmen Odud Mohammad Chowdhury, Kazi Shafiqul Islam (Titu), Arshad-ur-Rahman, Riaz Wayez and Bashir Uddin Ahmed. CMP and district police and senior BGMEA officials were present.

Receiving the relief, CMP commissioner Hasan Md Shawkat Ali and Superintendent of Police Masud Alam, BPM, praised BGMEA’s humanitarian initiative, saying the relief would be delivered to affected families quickly, fairly, transparently and in an orderly manner. Earlier, on 15 July, BGMEA standing-committee chairmen and senior officials visited flood-hit unions of Banshkhali and Satkania upazilas in Chattogram in person and distributed necessary relief among more than a thousand affected families. BGMEA leaders said standing by helpless people in any disaster is a moral and social duty, and that private-sector participation alongside government efforts is very important in tackling disasters.
