The United Nations condemned the killing of civilians in the Gaza Strip and called for health facilities in the besieged territory to be protected.

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the organization condemned all killings of civilians.

More than 150 people were killed in Israeli attacks in July, according to Gaza health authorities, Haq said. It was the highest death toll in a single month since the start of the year.

Haq also expressed concern about an Israeli attack Friday on a medical-supply warehouse near Al-Aqsa Hospital. The warehouse was reported destroyed.

Health facilities should never be attacked or used for military purposes, he said.

Haq also raised concerns about dwindling medical supplies in Gaza, including insulin for people with diabetes and medicines needed by heart patients.

Alcohol-based sanitizer needed for hand hygiene and infection prevention was also nearly unavailable, he said.

Many other supplies needed for infection prevention and control were awaiting Israeli authorization to enter Gaza, Haq said.

Gaza’s health system is facing a severe crisis amid the continuing conflict. The United Nations and other international organizations have repeatedly called for medical centers and emergency-service infrastructure to be protected.
