For many people, headaches become a daily problem during the hot season. Unsettled weather — fierce sun one moment, heavy rain the next — makes the problem worse. For some, a headache starts the moment they step out into the sun; for others, the same symptom appears after getting soaked in the rain. The pain may be on one side of the head, in the middle, or spread from one side to the other. Yet many people cannot tell whether the cause of the pain is sinus or migraine.
Because the risk of infection rises in the heat, sinus problems are seen relatively more often. The effect of intense heat and sun, on the other hand, can also increase migraine attacks. It is therefore important to identify the true cause of a headache.
According to doctors, dehydration can also be a major cause of headaches in summer. But people who suffer from sinus problems or migraine need to take special care. With sinus problems, alongside the headache, symptoms such as a runny nose, blocked nose, a burning sensation in the nose, and even occasional nosebleeds can appear. Pain may also be felt in the teeth, eyes and cheekbones. In many cases, allergy-related problems, itchy skin or infection also appear. Some patients may also develop a fever. Migraine pain, on the other hand, is different in character. It is usually felt as an intense, throbbing pain on one side of the head. This pain can last from 48 to 72 hours. Not only the head, but the neck and the back of the head also feel discomfort or pain. It may be accompanied by nausea, and bright light becomes hard to tolerate. Often it becomes difficult even to keep the eyes open. For some, tea or coffee, and for others, smoking or drinking alcohol, can make migraine pain worse.
