The government has snatched from the people their right to a referendum on state reform, National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has alleged. He made the remark on Friday (7 August) while visiting a photo exhibition organised by Jamaat-e-Islami to mark the second anniversary of the July mass uprising.
Criticising various government activities, Nahid Islam said the government had stolen the people’s right to a referendum on state reform. Although it took part in two votes, it did not accept one of them, he said.
He said there was currently no universal programme in the country. Just as the Awami League had partyised the Liberation War, he claimed, the current government was moving to partyise the July mass uprising.
Referring to a press conference held abroad, he said it had taken place because of the government’s lack of proper diplomatic initiative. He alleged that the Delhi government had assisted the conference, and said the Indian High Commissioner should have been summoned over it.
Saying the current government was “compromising to bring back fascist forces,” Nahid Islam said the constitution-amendment committee had already lost its legitimacy and the government had created a constitutional crisis.
Expressing concern about educational institutions, he alleged that the government was carrying out “terrorist activities” at various institutions known to be linked to the July movement and was trying to seize campuses.
He added that if structural reforms were not implemented, the current government too would become like the fascist Awami League.
