National Citizen Party (NCP) convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam has said the government is trying to avoid complaints over farmers’ hardship caused by the fertilizer crisis.
He made the comment at a briefing Wednesday, August 26, after a top-level meeting of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance.
Nahid Islam also said the opposition alliance will hold a march in the capital on August 30 to protest what it calls a weak enforced disappearance prevention law.
Opposition alliance leaders met to discuss the electricity, energy and fertilizer crises, the law-and-order situation, and the alliance’s program. The meeting, held at the leader of the opposition’s residence on Minto Road in the capital, brought together senior leaders of the 11-party alliance.
Following the meeting, opposition chief whip Nahid Islam addressed a press conference. He alleged that the government is bringing forward a draft human rights commission and enforced disappearance law that violates international standards. In protest, he said, the opposition alliance will march from Shahbagh toward parliament next Sunday.
Nahid Islam said August 30 is International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, observed globally, and that the alliance would take part in it spontaneously. He added that opposition members of parliament would also speak in parliamentary fashion during Thursday’s, August 27, session.
