Md Joj Mia, 55, general secretary of Ward 7 BNP in Faridpur union, Kuliarchar upazila, Kishoreganj, has been expelled from his party post over an allegation of raping a school student.
The information was disclosed in a press release Thursday, August 20, announcing the expulsion order, signed by Kishoreganj district BNP general secretary Md Mazharul Islam. Kishoreganj district BNP president Md Shariful Alam and general secretary Md Mazharul Islam approved the decision.
The press release said Md Joj Mia was expelled in accordance with a recommendation from Kuliarchar upazila BNP and a decision by the party’s central leadership. It also directed BNP leaders and activists at all levels to sever all organizational ties with him.
He was expelled from the party after a police case was filed against him over an allegation of raping a fifth-grade student from the same village.
Since the incident, the accused Joj Mia has been a fugitive, making it impossible to obtain his comment.
Kuliarchar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Arif Uddin confirmed the incident, saying a case was filed at the police station following a preliminary investigation based on a written complaint. Police operations to arrest the accused remain under way.
It may be noted that the rape allegation against Joj Mia emerged around 11:00 a.m. on August 13. The child was reportedly abducted, her mouth wrapped in a gamcha, from Faruq Mia’s land by the riverbank west of her home, and raped in a nearby wooded area along the riverbank. Over the incident, the child’s father filed a case against Joj Mia at Kuliarchar police station on August 15.
