A court has sentenced Md Mizanur Rahman Hazari (65) to life imprisonment for murdering a young man, Saiful Islam Sohan, over a money dispute in Cumilla’s Laksam. He was also fined 30,000 taka, with a further three months’ rigorous imprisonment in default.
His son and co-accused, Mehedi Hasan, was acquitted as the charge against him was not proved.
Cumilla additional district and sessions judge (fifth court) Mohammad Sultan Uddin Prodhan delivered the verdict on Thursday (6 August) afternoon.
The convict, Mizanur Rahman Hazari, is the son of the late Ali Hossain of Hazari Bari in Chikunia Dakshinpara in Cumilla’s Laksam upazila.
According to case records, on 8 April 2021, Saiful Islam Sohan and Mizanur Rahman had an argument over a money dispute. At one point, Mizanur Rahman hacked Sohan with a sharp machete, seriously injuring him. He was admitted to the ICU of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Over the incident, the victim’s father, Ruhul Amin, filed a murder case at Laksam police station on 26 April 2021, naming Mizanur Rahman Hazari and four others as accused.
On 14 February 2023, the court framed charges against Mizanur Rahman Hazari and his son Mehedi Hasan. During the trial, the prosecution presented 10 witnesses.
After examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court found the murder charge against Mizanur Rahman proved beyond doubt and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Mehedi Hasan was acquitted as the charge against him was not proved. Both accused were present in the dock when the verdict was delivered.
