A powerful earthquake has struck near Cuba’s northwest coast. Monday’s tremor, local time, was felt in Cuba as well as in Mexico and parts of Florida in the United States. The shaking caused widespread concern because it was felt in areas not usually earthquake-prone.
The US Geological Survey said the quake measured 6.1 in magnitude at a depth of about 26 kilometres (16 miles), with its epicentre about 104 kilometres west-northwest of the Cuban town of Mantua — several hours’ journey from the capital, Havana. USGS seismologist Paul Earle said such a strong earthquake in this part of the Caribbean is very unusual, because it occurred not at the junction of two tectonic plates but within a plate, where earthquakes are comparatively rare. He said the last quake this strong within a 322-kilometre (200-mile) radius of Monday’s epicentre was in 1880, when a 6.0-magnitude tremor was recorded near Cuba’s San Cristobal area. Authorities said it could take some time to establish the full picture of the damage.
