DEX News: The Holy Kaaba Sharif is not just the qibla for the Muslim ummah, but also one of the world’s most wondrous and historic structures. Many wonder why Kaaba Sharif is located in the heart of Mecca. Is it solely for religious reasons, or are there specific geographical and historical implications?

History reveals that this site was designated for the Holy Kaaba since the time of Hazrat Ibrahim (A.). Moreover, its unique geographical location amidst the mountains of the Jabal al-Safa’at range played a crucial role in the development and distinctiveness of Mecca as a city.

According to a report by the Saudi Press Agency, geographically, Mecca was originally a narrow passage between the Jebel al-Safa’at mountain range, known as the Ibrahim Uptake. The Holy Masjid al-Haram is surrounded by high mountains, yet its main location is on low, flat ground.

This sacred mosque is encircled by several historic mountains deeply intertwined with the history of Islam. To the east lies Jabel Abu Kubais, and to the west are Jabel Quaikain, Jabel Noor, and Jabel Sawr.

Geological analysis shows that the Mecca region is part of the ‘Arab Shield’ or the Arabian Peninsula’s geological core, characterized by ancient igneous rocks and granite formations, giving the area its unique topography.

As per the Encyclopedia of Saudi Arabia, the region’s natural geography facilitated ancient trade routes across the Arabian Peninsula, gradually establishing Mecca as a significant commercial center.

Experts believe that the unique blend of spiritual significance, geographical advantages, and commercial importance has positioned Mecca at the heart of the Muslim world for centuries. And at the center of this hub stands the Holy Kaaba Sharif, an eternal symbol of unity, worship, and submission.
