A tourist, Sajid Shahariar Sanam, 24, went into the Karnaphuli river at the Pathar Ghat stretch of Sitar Ghat in Kaptai, Rangamati, and was submerged. The incident took place at about 1.30pm on Sunday.
Sanam, who is missing, is a final-year student in the computer science and engineering department at Chittagong University. He is the son of Nasir Uddin of Raipura upazila in Narsingdi district.
Local people and witnesses said a group of nine tourists from Narsingdi and Dhaka reached Kaptai at about 10am on Sunday. With a local guide, they went trekking on Sitar hill in Kaptai. Coming down from the hill at about 1.30pm, they went into the Karnaphuli river at the Pathar Ghat stretch of Sitar Ghat to wash their hands and faces. Sanam suddenly slipped and fell into the deep water of the river.
A friend of the missing student, Saiful Islam, said: “Nine of us came from Dhaka and climbed Sitar hill in the morning. After finishing the hill trip we came down to the ghat to wash our hands and faces in the river. Just then our friend Sanam slipped and was submerged in a moment. We tried hard ourselves but could not rescue him.”
Kaptai police and a fire service diving team reached the scene quickly on hearing of the incident. A rescue operation is under way in the river.
After visiting the scene, the local union council member Md Sarowar Hossain said: “We rushed to the scene as soon as we heard. There has been no trace of the missing student so far. The fire service and the diving team are working hard to recover Sanam.”
