The 2026-27 budget has taken a move to cut the corporate tax rate on private universities and medical, dental, engineering and information-technology-based educational institutions. Under the proposed change, the tax rate for these institutions is to be cut from 10 percent to 5 percent.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) said the tax break was aimed at improving the quality of education, expanding infrastructure and supporting the private education sector.
The reduced rate is proposed for private universities, medical colleges, dental colleges, engineering colleges and IT-based institutions, with the conditions for the cut relaxed compared with before. UGC-approved private universities and related private institutions will come under the benefit.
Private universities’ associations had long been demanding that the tax be reduced or withdrawn.
