Leaders of the Sylhet district and city units of Jamaat-e-Islami stood by bereaved families as the bodies of six expatriates from Qatar were received at Sylhet Osmani International Airport.
On Tuesday (30 June) morning, the Sylhet Jamaat leaders arrived before the coffins reached the airport. They helped receive the bodies and offered their condolences to the families of the dead.
Six coffins arrived from Qatar on Tuesday morning, all of those who had died in accidents — five from Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet and one from Fenchuganj upazila.
On 21 June, six people were killed in a road accident in the Shahaniya area of Qatar; five of the dead were residents of Kanaighat upazila.
Separately, Lifon Mia of South Ashighar village in Ghilachhara union of Fenchuganj was seriously injured by electrocution while on duty in Qatar on the morning of 17 June and later died in hospital. His body, too, was received at Osmani airport on Tuesday morning.
Those present to receive the bodies included Muhammad Fakhrul Islam, a member of Jamaat’s central working committee and Sylhet city Ameer; Maulana Habibur Rahman, a member of the central Majlis-e-Shura and Sylhet district Ameer; city secretary Mohammad Shahjahan Ali; district secretary and former Jaintapur upazila chairman Zainal Abedin; district naib-e-Ameer Hafiz Anwar Hossain Khan; former Fenchuganj upazila chairman Saifullah Al Hossain; and district assistant secretary Nazrul Islam, among others.
The Jamaat leaders prayed for the souls of the deceased and conveyed their condolences to the grieving families. The dead expatriates came from poor families and had gone abroad to bring smiles to their relatives, they said; many had borrowed money to go. A single accident had taken their lives. The leaders said the government, political parties and the well-off should all come forward to support the families, and that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami would stand by the six bereaved families with whatever help it could offer.
The Kanaighat victims were Jibal Uddin of Amrapur, Jasim Uddin of Majtaluk, Mostak Ahmad and Zubayer Ahmad of Agtaluk, and Kader Ahmad of Nij Gachbari.
