US President Donald Trump has threatened to launch a massive bombing campaign against Oman if the country stands in the way of the US blockade on Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a Fox News report.
In a telephone interview, Trump told Fox News: “If Oman gets in the way, we will bomb them massively.”
The US president said the blockade is being enforced to increase pressure on Iran, though he added he has no fixed timeline for resolving the ongoing conflict. In his words, he is “in no hurry.”
The war between the United States and Iran has continued for nearly six months without resolution. Ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran aimed at establishing a lasting peace have effectively stalled, while intermittent clashes between the two sides continue.
The conflict has also disrupted the transport of oil and other key commodities through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route. Rising global oil and gas prices are affecting the US domestic economy and politics as well.
Ahead of November’s midterm elections, rising energy prices are adding to the political pressure on Trump’s Republican Party, the report noted.
