A powerful earthquake has struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region. The magnitude-6 quake was felt from the capital, Kabul, across the border into some areas of neighbouring Pakistan.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said Saturday’s quake originated 100 kilometres below the ground. A few hours earlier, a magnitude-5.4 quake had been felt in Pakistan.

More than 20 people were injured in various parts of Pakistan’s Musakhail district in the quake. The district’s deputy commissioner, Abdul Razzaq Khajak, told Reuters that dozens of houses had been damaged.

Pakistan’s Balochistan provincial disaster management authority said about 125 houses had been damaged. Relief and rescue teams had been sent to the affected areas, with tents, food, solar panels, blankets and other essential supplies.

Local resident Daniyal Ahmad said people had rushed out of their homes onto the streets in panic in Pakistan’s Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during the quake.

“The earthquake was very powerful in Swat. The shaking was felt for a long time,” Daniyal said.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the damage and ordered authorities to take urgent steps to help those affected, the prime minister’s office said.
