Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, or CUET, remained shut for a seventh day amid a student movement demanding reinstatement of the vice-chancellor. Academic and administrative activities have come to a standstill.
Teachers and officials are also taking part in the movement in support of the students’ demand. Meanwhile, the newly appointed vice-chancellor remains firm on joining the post. He said he had already joined online and was carrying out duties. The situation has created uncertainty over a resolution.
On the seventh day, students boycotted classes and examinations and took positions at the CUET gate from the morning. Protesters said they would hold a mass signature program on white cloth, a protest procession, a rally and a cultural program at noon. The doors of the administrative building have also been kept locked. Students fear a session backlog because of the continuous movement. They urged the government to accept their demand quickly and resolve the crisis.
After only 56 days in office, the government transferred former Vice-Chancellor Abu Sadat Md. Sayem and appointed Dr. Sheikh Shariful Alam. Students began the movement demanding cancellation of the notification, calling the former vice-chancellor capable and CUET-friendly.
