US President Donald Trump had a heated argument with Republican Senator Bill Cassidy in a closed-door meeting with Republican lawmakers in Washington on Wednesday, Reuters reported. The confrontation took place as Trump’s administration simultaneously asked Congress for several billion more dollars to cover the costs of the Iran war.
Several Republican members who attended the meeting said Trump and Cassidy clashed sharply. Cassidy said the administration needed to explain the framework agreement it signed with Iran last week, because the deal offered Iran financial incentives while failing to meet the objectives Trump had stated at the start of the war.
“The American people need to know more than we are being told,” Cassidy told reporters. “Things don’t seem to be going the way we were told they would.”
Shortly after the meeting, Republican Senate leaders held a late-night vote to block a war powers resolution calling for an end to the Iran war, a resolution that had passed in May. The Senate voted 50-47 to block it. Trump posted on social media afterward: “This vote sent a warning to Iran.” The vote does not alter any previous decisions.
The war has created significant political pressure for Trump ahead of November’s congressional elections.
