US President Donald Trump has said American forces should not have got involved in the war with Iran. He made the comment in an interview with Fox News while discussing his next steps on Iran.

Recalling the Iraq war, Trump said: “You see what happened in Iraq. We did very badly there. What we did was a very foolish thing. First of all, we should not have gone there.”

Turning to Iran, he said: “We should not have been in Iran, but Iran has that capability. If we had not struck them with B-2 bombers nine months ago, they would have a nuclear weapon at this moment, and if that had happened the situation would be completely different. Perhaps you would not have had Israel, or even the Middle East. Where would they have gone from there?”

In the interview, Trump also claimed the United States had deliberately spared Iran’s military. “We essentially did not touch their military, because we think their military is somewhat moderate,” he said. “They have other people who are not moderate. We targeted them and removed various levels of leadership. But we actually did nothing to their military.”

Trump added: “People may be surprised to hear this, because in war there are mistakes where you wipe everyone out, and that creates a country that may not be able to rebuild for another 40 years.”
