Iran-US deal: Israel ‘has lost’ — so what comes next?

The deal between Iran and the United States amounts to a defeat for Israel and, personally, for Benjamin Netanyahu. Like many others, Israeli political analyst Gideon Levy sees it that way. In his view, Tel Aviv now has no path left other than deliberately taking steps to sabotage it.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Levy said the Iran issue had been Benjamin Netanyahu’s “life project.” But Israel has now been left entirely outside the negotiation process. Practically, they have no option left but to take steps aimed at sabotage.

In Levy’s words, the latest example of such sabotage is the “absurd and childish strike” carried out in southern Beirut on Sunday. This shows that in the entire deal process it is Israel alone that has come out the loser. How committed U.S. President Donald Trump is to keeping Netanyahu’s administration in check remains to be truly tested.

The Israeli political analyst further said that if Tel Aviv’s main objectives are not met, it will not be satisfied with any ceasefire. As a result, Netanyahu himself may try to wreck the ceasefire. The biggest challenge for the Iran-US deal is therefore now the situation in Lebanon.

Levy also believes the Iranians managed quite skillfully to fold the Lebanon issue into the deal. But it is unclear how that will work in practice, because Israeli troops are still positioned in Lebanon. There appears to be no desire to withdraw from there either.

In Levy’s view, as long as Israeli troops remain there (in Lebanon), a full ceasefire cannot be implemented. That is because resistance to the Israeli occupation in Lebanon will continue at all times.
