BERLIN — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, saying that a powerful country like the U.S. is being humiliated by the Iranian government.
Speaking with students in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Merz said the United States does not appear to have a clear “exit strategy” from the war.
The German chancellor also said the Iranian government is currently negotiating with considerable shrewdness. Iran is proving to be much stronger and more capable than it had been assumed to be, he said.
According to Reuters, Merz’s remarks came at a time when U.S. strategy in the Middle East is under intense international scrutiny. He made clear that the current U.S. position in the Iran crisis had disappointed him and that he saw no easy way out of the situation.
