Pakistan is considering buying cheap oil and gas from Iran. Energy Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said on Sunday that Pakistan was planning to buy oil and gas from Tehran following the end of the Iran-US war and the lifting of sanctions on Iran.

Speaking to the media in Lahore, the minister said that when the Iran-US conflict was at its peak, the price of petroleum products had reached PKR 460 per litre in April. But global prices had since fallen significantly, he said.

Washington and Tehran signed the “Islamabad memorandum of understanding” in Switzerland on 17 June, mediated by Pakistan.

Under the MoU, the United States committed to immediately lifting, through its Treasury Department, sanctions on the export of Iran’s crude oil and petroleum products until the sanctions were withdrawn, including all related services such as banking transactions, insurance and transport.

Malik said Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had immediately passed on the benefit to the public and cut fuel prices.
