The United States could strike Iran on Saturday or Sunday, according to two US officials, who said the country announced such a plan on Friday.
Nothing clear is known, however, about the specific scope or possible targets of any strike on Iran. The two officials also cautioned that the plan could be called off.
The announcement came after President Donald Trump signalled a strike on Iran. Trump had earlier said US strikes on Iran were unlikely to stop soon. At a cabinet meeting he said: “We are going to hit them very hard.”
According to the latest reports, no fresh strike was announced overnight. US Central Command (CENTCOM) did not report any new strikes against Iran on Thursday or Friday either.
Earlier this week, the United States said it had carried out “one major strike” the previous day in response to an attempted Iranian attack on a US military base in Jordan.
According to UK Maritime Trade Operations, a tanker was hit by a “missile” near the Strait of Hormuz. Who was responsible for the attack is not yet clear.
