US President Donald Trump has said the memorandum of understanding signed with Iran has collapsed. Speaking to reporters at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, he said continuing negotiations with Iran would be a waste of time.

A memorandum on a ceasefire between the United States and Iran had been signed with Pakistan’s mediation, aimed at negotiating a final agreement within 60 days. But indirect talks held in Qatar made no progress. The US military then launched fresh strikes on Iran again on Tuesday.

Ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said: “I think the memorandum of understanding with Iran is done. Negotiators from both sides can sit at the table and talk all they want, but I think they’re just wasting time.”

He added: “They are very bad people. Their leadership is also in the hands of bad people. They are violent. If they had nuclear weapons, they would use them. As far as I’m concerned, this is over.”

The United States has carried out extensive air and missile strikes on more than 80 targets in Iran around the Strait of Hormuz. Washington alleges Tehran is responsible for recent attacks on commercial vessels in this critical international trade route, and says the military operation was conducted in response.

In retaliation for the US aggression, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks on 85 US military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait.
