SpaceX’s giant Starship rocket has reached orbit successfully for the first time on its 14th test flight and deployed new Starlink satellites in space.

The uncrewed mission, planned for 10 hours, was cut to just three hours after one of the ship’s three main engines shut down unexpectedly after separating from the Super Heavy booster. The 40-storey rocket launched from the Starbase complex on the Gulf of Mexico coast on Monday (September 28) local time.

Although one of Starship’s main engines shut down after reaching space, engineers acted quickly to fire the other engines and place the vehicle in orbit.

Once in orbit, Starship deployed 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites, the rocket’s first orbital satellite launch. Elon Musk and SpaceX have been congratulated from many quarters on the achievement.

The test mission ended with a controlled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, a step expected to play an important role in sending astronauts to the Moon and speeding up SpaceX’s satellite operations.
