Russian ballistic missile and drone attacks across Ukraine killed 17 people and injured 44, the BBC reported Wednesday, citing Ukrainian officials.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said stronger air defenses could have saved lives. He said residential buildings, railway stations and warehouses had been targeted in attacks that began after midnight.

Zelenskyy described the assault as this year’s deadliest and has sought U.S.-made Patriot missile interceptors from President Donald Trump, the report said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it targeted logistics hubs and supply centers in and around Kyiv and claimed it had attacked three cargo vessels carrying weapons and military equipment. The Russian claims were not independently verified.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said people were believed trapped beneath debris. Ukraine’s emergency service reported one death and 16 injuries in Kyiv, while 16 people were killed elsewhere.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles and four anti-ship missiles at Kyiv, and launched 115 drones overnight. It said fires were extinguished in at least five regions.
