Just one day remains before Argentina begin their World Cup campaign. La Albiceleste take the field against Algeria early on Wednesday in their first match in Group J. Ahead of that match, the excitement of the world champions’ supporters has spread across Kansas City. Thousands of Argentine fans have begun gathering at various spots in the city for the Algeria match, turning the whole atmosphere blue and white with their presence.
According to a report by TyC Sports, a large gathering of supporters was held in the city’s restaurant district, organised by a popular beer brand. Alongside Argentines living in the United States, fans who travelled from Argentina for the World Cup also took part. It was not only Argentina’s followers; football lovers from other countries, drawn by their love for Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, also joined the celebration.
The fence of the Sol Montessori School near the gathering site was decorated with sky-blue and white flags, images of the three World Cup-winning stars, various slogans, the emblems of Argentine clubs, the names of different cities in the country, and portraits of Messi and Maradona. It created a festive atmosphere across the whole area.
A special attraction was the famous drum of Tula, the legendary Argentina supporter. Tula, recognised with FIFA’s “The Best” award as the world’s best supporter, died in February 2024. At his family’s request, that historic drum was brought to Kansas by Guillermo. He told TyC Sports: “This drum has been to every World Cup since 1974. We are playing it. We are bringing all the supporters together.”
Organisers expect that the closer the match gets, the more the turnout of supporters will grow. Thousands more Argentines are thought likely to reach Kansas before the match. Their lively presence will also be seen at the 76,000-capacity Kansas City stadium. The excitement of supporters before the Algeria match shows just how much expectation and emotion surround the world champions.
